Why are we doing this?

Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) have historically been excluded from wealth building opportunities, including homeownership through intentionally racist mortgage programs and land use restrictions. Although these practices are illegal now, the impact has resulted in a loss of generational wealth and disempowered BIPOC families and individuals continue to experience systemic racism today.

Shela Linton, The Root: " We created this group to the reclaim our power as BIPOC and redistribute wealth for ourselves and our families through home ownership."

What are we doing?

The process is based around the group's needs. What's useful to you is how we want to build the series.

Here are some ideas:

  • Budgeting for home purchase

  • Building credit

  • Comparing mortgage loans/programs

  • Breaking down the loan estimate/closing costs

  • Working with a Realtor

  • Addressing the Racialized experiences in home buying process

  • And whatever topics are of interest to you.

Who is this for?

The group is specifically for BIPOC families, BIPOC+ multi racial families, and BIPOC individuals to work through the homebuying process in a BIPOC centered and safer space at the Root.

The Group will start with an orientation to the series on April 29, 11 am.
