“ONE Perspective” showcases the Old North End neighborhood, a sometimes overlooked area in Burlington.
“I’ve lived in the ONE for 40 years and have loved my neighbors, businesses that range from restaurants to locksmiths and everything in-between, lots of non-profits trying to make the world better, artists tucked into every corner, all of the cultures that make this a melting pot of different skin colors with many languages and delicious food and gorgeous clothing.
I have taken photos of people, construction projects, events, homes and buildings, animals, parks, and the lake…knowing that I’ve missed lots of people and places in this small slice. I try to be respectful of the people and places shown. If someone is uncomfortable with having her/his/their photo in the show, please let me know as soon as possible.
I’ve used the same ONE boundaries that the Old North End Arts & Business Network does---Pearl Street to the south, Lake Champlain to the west, Intervale to the north, and Winooski River to the east. Originally, over 1,000 photos were hung in the ONE Community Center in February 2019. Most can still be found lining the walls there.
I feel honored to have owned my house on St. Louis Street for 23 years, the former home of the Gravel Family who lived here for 100 years prior. I work from home as Executive Director of “HANDS”, a non-profit getting food to low-income seniors, own Sweet Basil Cards, and provide consulting. These jobs have allowed me to meet some fabulous people right here in the neighborhood.
My interest in photography began with a little Kodak camera when I was a kid. After my Mom died when I was 18, my Dad suggested that I get a camera so that he and I could go lose ourselves in taking photos. Dad had a great observant eye and I hope that I have even the smallest amount of his wonderful perspective.
Very special thanks to everyone who has supported this endeavor, most especially Champlain Housing Trust, Donors to my Kickstarter, Terry Hotaling, Jess Hyman, Mark Johnson, Michael Monte, April and Steph of North End Studios, and Sam Simon. And many thanks to all of you who have shown up to enjoy the photos! I hope they bring a smile to your face as you recognize people and locations in the ONE.”
